Lake Minnetonka is the crown jewel of the Twin Cities and possibly of the entire upper Midwest! The lakes history is amazing with majestic hotels on her shores as early as 1879. The Hotel St Louis in Deephaven offered 150 guest rooms with private verandas. The largest hotel ever built on the lake was the Hotel Lafayette, built in 1882 with 5 stories and over 400 rooms. The Twin City Rapid Transit Company started serving the lake with Street Car service to Excelsior in about 1905 and opened Big Island Park in 1906. Tourists could then ride the street cars from Minneapolis to Excelsior and board a ferry to take them to the island. Big Island Park is now owned by the city of Orono and is open to the public as a nature preserve with public docks, beaches and hiking trails.
